December – Holiday Stress
“Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. ” ― Calvin Coolidge
We all know the holidays are busy and can be stressful. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, NAMI, 64% of people with mental illness reported their conditions worsen around the holidays. Factors such as finances, stress, loneliness, high expectations, and increased substance misuse play a role in the increase. I believe our perspective of putting what really matters during the holidays first will help our mental health and stress levels during all of the holiday buzz. Our children, family, and friends are not going to remember how clean our homes were or the perfect decorations. What will be remembered is the way we make each other feel and the magic and memories we create with those around us.
Let’s help spread love and kindness as we approach the holidays to make Christmas the most wonderful time of the year. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) offers a few suggestions:
- Spend your time with people who support you and have your best interest at hand.
- Avoid saying yes to everything. Minimize commitments and do not let yourself feel guilty for setting boundaries.
- Consume alcohol in moderation or avoid it completely if you are feeling down.
- Exercise and move. Getting outside for some fresh air and sunshine is good for us even if the weather is a little cold.
- Rest.
- Create a budget and stick to it.
- Volunteer your time and talents. Spreading joy not only makes others feel good, but we also benefit from helping others.
If you or anyone you know may be struggling, I would love to chat with you to see if a sound frequency session would help release any trapped emotions to feel more calm, balanced and at peace.
Have a beautiful holiday season filled with joy and peace!
