September – Multi-tasking
“Multi-tasking is merely the opportunity to screw up more than one thing at a time.”― Gary W. Keller
I used to take pride in the fact that I could multi-task. I felt I had mastered juggling so many different things at once. This seemed like a required skill in the construction industry I had worked in. As much as I do enjoy keeping busy, I now know the importance of slowing down and being focused on the single task at hand.
When switching from task to task we are actually wasting time because of the amount of time it takes for our brain to shift from task to task. According to an article in the Harvard Business Review by Paul Atchley “Based on over a half-century of cognitive science and more recent studies on multitasking, we know that multitaskers do less and miss information. It takes time (an average of 15 minutes) to re-orient to a primary task after a distraction such as an email. Efficiency can drop by as much as 40%.” Focusing on too many things at once creates room for error as well. Additional stress is also a negative side effect when trying to take on too much all at once.
I invite you to look at your to do list and priorities and dive into how you can minimize the amount of multi-tasking in your day to day life. Notice how this will begin to shift your stress levels and create a more efficient use of time during your day. Listing to a sound bath is a great way to help shift your attention into a more calm state. Feel free to listen to a recorded sound bath on my website to help you get started (http://shinesoundtherapy.com/category/sound-baths).
Have a beautiful day!
