September – Suicide Prevention Month
“This life. This night. Your story. Your hope. It matters. All of it matters.” ― Jamie Tworkowski
During National Suicide Prevention Month in September, the focus is on transforming the public’s understanding of suicide, inspiring hope, and sharing critical resources with the community. Sadly, numerous individuals have been impacted by suicide, either personally or through someone they care about. As a society, we still have much to learn about supporting those in our midst. It can be dauting to recognize signs of distress, or there may be no discernible indicators of hopelessness.
At the beginning of the month I attended the Be the Light Walk benefiting the Brown County Coalition for suicide prevention. During the evening I was touched by many stories of what survivors and families have experiences. I also learned of so many valuable resources within the community. After this experience, I know I need to help share awareness. We need to all be kind because we do not know what others may be going through. Here are some ways to emotionally help those around you:
- Be aware – Recognize when someone you know or care about may need healing help. Look for signs or changes to what they may be going through.
- Listen – This may seem simple, but we need to be present and make sure our family and friends feel heard.
- Help with Tasks – Assisting with day to day to do items or bringing someone a meal can make a big difference and lift a weight from what a person may be feeling and experiencing.
- Guide – Share and provide resources that will assist in healing and support.
- Respect – Be mindful of boundaries and the privacy of someone you are supporting. This person may be sharing something very sensitive, so you need to respect their privacy. If you are worried about their safety please get in touch with local support.
Please check in with those around you and hold the space they may need. Everyone is unique and has different experiences and that is an amazing thing. If you or someone you know are having any thoughts of suicide, I am always here if you need anything.
May we each be the light for someone around us!
